Rewarding and Inspiring Leadership Coaching
One of the most rewarding and inspiring things I do at Collier & Company is provide leadership coaching to professionals and executives. It is powerful to witness a leader develop the confidence and skills to successfully navigate her or his way through the challenging waters of managing people and organizational politics.
When to hire a Leadership Coach
Years ago, companies hired executive coaches to come in and fix “broken” executives. Currently, most companies hire executive coaches as a way to invest in their top executives and high potentials. It’s no longer a stigma to have a coach; it’s a status symbol! While executives can hire their own coaches, it’s more common for companies to recommend a coach to an executive as a part of an executive development program. The coachee could be newly promoted, be facing a number of challenges (usually involving interpersonal relationships), or is being groomed for larger roles. I have also been called in to help leaders resolve interpersonal conflicts and address productivity.
The ROI of Leadership Coaching
My leadership coaching philosophy is grounded in Emotional Intelligence. When leaders have a strong foundation in Emotional Intelligence (EI), organizations and companies are more productive and effective. While many factors impact revenue growth, organizations that measure and improve EI in their leaders are 16% more likely to report growth. Furthermore, organizations that value and widely use Emotional Intelligence are 3.2x more effective at leadership development. There is a 31% gap in leadership development effectiveness between organizations where EI is valued, and those where it is not. While leadership development methods require a commitment of time and consistency to be most effective, the payoff to the organization and its future is significant. (Wiete, Aubrey K., MA. Leadership and Emotional Intelligence: The Keys to Driving ROI and Organizational Performance, Human Capital Institute, 2013). My credentials include a Masters in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oregon, Coaching Certification, and I am certified by the Multi-Health System to facilitate the EQi 2.0.
The Need for Emotional Intelligence as a Leadership Development Tool
Leaders today are required to do more with less. They need to streamline information and processes in the face of increased, more rapid communication and diverse talent. Attracting skilled people to work with them is key. Understanding people, recognizing their wants and needs, and effectively capitalizing on that information requires emotional intelligence. Leaders must become more emotionally intelligent to be more effective and efficient in maximizing outcomes and results. In addition, leaders simply cannot be successful in today’s environment without having the skills and understanding to communicate effectively cross-generationally and cross-culturally. Working with and through people is critical. The necessity of human connection is universal.
